When is taking it too far really taking it too far?
I’m a late adopter, for sure. Even so, it took me forever to jump on the “social networking” bandwagon, and even now I only use it to follow my family’s posts when I’m travelling. In my brief exposure to Facebook, I’ve found they have all manners of useless, time-consuming junk.
This afternoon, we receive a call from a number I don’t recognize. I answer the phone, they ask for my wife and I pass it off not knowing the absurdity to follow. Turns out its my wife’s boss. Naturally I figure its something to do with work or at least _relatively_ important. My wife and her boss are friends, but their friendship couldn’t be considered “close”. I doubt I could have been more wrong. I watch my wife get the details of her boss’ Facebook account. Even at this point, I’m curious but not quite aware how ridiculous this is. Then I see her open this game, I don’t know the name — nor do I care, but she hops in the game to MAKE SURE HER BOSS’ VIRTUAL PIES DON’T BURN. As absurd as it is, people do it every day — and enjoy it. I’m no stranger of video games, I myself have played World of Warcraft for some time now, I just recently quit. But at least there is something to work towards and competitiveness and difficulty associated with these sorts of game.
I was discussing the aggressiveness of these new social networking sites with a colleague at a recent client. We were talking about new technologies, facebook, myspace, twitter, etc. You name it, it came up. He was pointing out that when these sites started, you had to have a mental note to check your page to ensure you made timely updates. Now you get updates about private messages, people writing on your wall, twitter updates, myspace posts, comments on your posts, comments on your wall graffiti, maybe even when someone changes their mood color. Eventually I’ll know when someone paints their fucking toenails before they even walk out of their home. Because that’s important right? Maybe we’re taking this user-experience and connectivity effort a bit too far? Who knows? I don’t, but that’s my 2 cents.
Well, that’s it for now.

I laughed
I do agree that some people are taking these ‘games’ too far. Can’t imagine what kind of grandparents will they turn out to be and what kind of a generation will they (if they will…) help raise.
